Default How to make uTorrent "give priority" to my roommates connection?

Not sure if this is possible, is there a way to have uTorrent ''give priority" and automatically lower its upload/download usage when something else attempts to use the internet?

For example, if I am seeding torrents with a large portion of my up speed and my roommate tries to play xbox live - his xbox live connection will be terrible and laggy and I have to manually pause and resume when hes finished (often forgetting to resume)

Is there a way to have uTorrent automatically give way to other connections looking for bandwith so I don't have to do this?

    Hey Jim.
I am probably not the best person to answer to your question, but as far as I know there is not such thing. And even if there is I don't believe it would solve your problem, since even if you could reduce your roommate's lag, just the fact that you would still make some lag would completely mess up his gameplay. I'm afraid the best solution is to completely stop your internet connection.
But anyway, lets see what other TI members have to say about this :)

i think it would help if you right click on the torrent --> Bandwidth Allocation --> Low
this would lower your data packets priority but I don't know at what level, I mean only at uTorrent level, OS level or modem level, i don't know for sure but try this atleast

I'm not aware of any direct way to do this in utorrent. If there is, perhaps someone else will comment. Sort of brute force approaches would be to limit the utorrent bandwidth, so that the connection does not saturate. Or assign a lower priority to the utorrent process within your OS. You can right click and set some priority within utorrent.

The best way to do what you want is with QOS (quality of service) settings. Many operating systems and better routers will have some type of QOS configuration. IN something like Window Vista or 7, it's very simplistic and you can't do much more than prioritize a percentage of bandwidth for your roommate. But if you have a decent router or reflash your router with better firmware e.g. Tomato.. then you have great QOS options that will do exactly what you want and a lot more.

I use Tomato and can allocate bandwidth to various computers, devices, IP addresses, prioritize gaming, voip or whatever, monitor, log, juggle and mix cocktails (well, almost).

i used to play CSS while my uTorrent was working at limited speeds. i think i reserved 20kB of upload and 100kB uf download speed to my gaming needs. those were the safe numbers - NO LAG. you can alter those numbers if your homey is getting some lag. also, ping is more crucial than you might think. 20ms is ok-ish, 50 is right on the line and everything beyond that means either disabling the internet for yourself or a serious new configuration with your router settings.

The best thing to do is to stop all torrents. Even if you lower your upload speed, your friend will still be laggy because utorrent will use it's assigned connections thus saturating your line.

just limit upload speed or download speed. Right your torrent and click bandwidth allocation and set dl and ul limit

Some have settings to allocate resources per connection.
