    Default dead TV!!

Any tv tech's here at TI?

looking for some advice, my 32in. dynex lcd died on me the other day. am fishing for some possiible reasons.

tv worked fine one morning, then got home from work, and nothing. total black screen, when i hit the power button, the light changes from red to green like usual, but nothing happens. had sound at first, but no pic. just a black blank screen.
tried to unplug and try again, but same result.
now im in no super rush, i have others tv's. i would just like to find out what the possible problem might be.
    thanks

It's almost impossible to troubleshoot a TV at a distance past the very obvious and in the absence of very distinctive symptoms.

Check for the obvious, that any source e.g. satellite, cable, DVD input cables are secure and that they work with a different TV. That someone didn't change the "input source" setting to an unused one, etc. Past that, you might try to lay your hands on a service manual for your particular set. You neglected to post absolutely crucial details like the model #. Perhaps someone here may have a copy of the manual. But your more likely bet is asking nicely if you can photocopy a few pages at your local service dealer.

TV repair is a real specialty even amongst electronic technicians. If you can get the service manual, it will have a code (key sequence) that will get you into the service menus and you might be able to avail yourself to the built in self-test. But it's limited in scope & it's possible that your set has no video output at all. There should also be a code to reset all of the menus to factory defaults. But most of the time the set needs to be opened up, visually examined and then put on a scope or analyzer to look at the bus voltages, test capacitors, search for shots shorts, et cetera.

If AND ONLY IF you understand electrical safety precautions, you might open the set and check for visibly failed glass fuses, bulging capacitors or scorched components. But this is a long shot at at best and fool hardy if you don't have any electrical /electronics experience. Also, if the set is still under warranty, opening the case may void that warranty. There are very high and possibly LETHAL voltages inside, even after you unplug it from the wall outlet!! So DON'T open the case if you don't understand the risks.

looks like you have a bad capacitor. You can fix it yourself for like $10 or so.

LOL. Maybe. Or it could be a failed LCD lamp, IC, power regulator, fuse or any of about 500 other components inside the case. Not to mention intermittent or multiple failures or downstream collateral damage. The majority of failures cannot be discerned upon visual inspection. But electrolytic capacitors (these look like small tin cans) will often bulge on the top when they fail.

    well m no techie,
whenever such thing happens to my electronic gadgets what i do is just i rap the gadget till it starts again, works most of the time
but its very unwise to open the gadget ourself coz its very risky and chance is more of creating more damage than resolving it

@don_rocks.. I know a service tech or two who would love to have your picture for their dart board.

I don't know how effective beating your TV set is going to be. Perhaps violence will be more persuasive after our TV sets become sentient..
