I actually had a similar problem before, in the end I had to reinstall windows, if you got the OS cd just press F9, F8 I forgot which one when you turn on your computer and just click on the option to boot from cd and you should be able to reinstall windows, if your cd also gives you a black screen then just burn another copy I'm sure if you're here you might have access to it. The black screen happened to me when I was trying to go back to one of my past restore points and sounds almost exactly like your problem.

Mmmm I'm not really too computer savy so maybe another member here can provide an answer, but I'll drop in another small suggestion for the time being. Maybe burn a program called Hiren's boot cd as it has ever so many programs that can help restore your computer. I personally never used it as I always reinstall windows if I have issues or even just small virus problems lol but from what I've seen around the internet this is one of the best solutions. Sorry I can't help out any more, I don't really specialize in this field =(

I haven't experienced this first hand, but it's a well known occurrence. The usual speculation is that the shell isn't loading correctly vis a vis a corrupt registry key. This is plausible because all of the various and differing solutions seem to revolve around reloading the shell or re-initializing the same registry branch.

Have a look here (Microsoft tech forum). The third post gives more details and proposes a "solution" for you to try.

The disk you are using you have used before and it worked fine?

If its a new disk then did you burn as slowly as your drive would let you? Are you formatting the disk or just trying to re-install windows only?

If you dont have any data you dont mind losing and want to go overkill then it would be easiest to just boot from the DVD before windows load, format and install windows fresh without even having to get into windows. To do this when you turn on your PC you want to press DEL (or whichever key it is to enter setup in BIOS), then go to the boot device priority and put your DVD drive as number 1, exit and save the settings, have your DVD in the drive when its turning on... it will say "hit any key to boot from DVD"... hit one... Voila format then install windows.

My solution might be overkill but its a damn sight quicker than attempting to fix the specific flaw and will get your PC up and running again

I once had this issue myself but thankfully after much messing around, i just needed to turn my monitor off and on whilst the screen was black and the PC was on. It fixed it for me, no idea why and i doubt you will be so lucky but its worth a try!

If the graphics card was somehow loose (extremely unlikely due to how they clip in) then there wouldnt be any picture rather than it disappearing once in windows.
