Default Just got caught by verizon! help!

okay, I just got a message from verizon saying that my account was involved in a copyright issue. I checked online and this happens to be the 3rd notice!! This time it was for a movie that I torrented, the second time was for a song someone else downloaded, and the 1st one was for a movie that I torrented back in 2009!

So I have a few questions. Does anyone know what Verizon will do if I get caught again? What happens the fourth time? And is there any way that I can avoid getting caught? I should mention that I was already using peer block this time, but somehow they still got me. Is there anything that I can do that will completely destroy any chance of me getting caught by verizon?

Also, are there any type of torrents that I should be avoiding? I usually get my torrents from public websites like btjunkie, and isohunt.

Try private (well you asked a private tracking community) if you want something off a public just use the request system and someone better able should grab it for ya.

No i don't know what happens the 4th time, honestly verizon never sent me a single notice...I actually thought they didn't just because i never got one from them.

Don't use public sites for your downloading, Pick up an IPT invite and you will be fine ,and you can also use PeerBlock to help you out a bit.
If it happens to many times your going to loose your service or worse.

If you want an IPT invite pm me ill hook you up.

I don't know what Verizon might do, but their ultimate recourse is to pull your account. More serious would be if the copyright holder named you in a lawsuit and asked for a bunch of $.

You're pretty exposed by being in the US because it is a very litigious country. If you want no risk, then you'd have to stay off the net. You'd do well to avoid public trackers and stick to private ones. If you want to be very conservative, then you could use usenet instead of torrents. Peer block is better than nothing, but not a guarantee of anything. Better than peer block would be going into your torrent client settings and make sure that encryption is set to "forced". And if you want an added measure of safety consider a seedbox, so that the first point of contact on the network is not your home computers IP address.

Sorry to hear that. It's time to get a seedbox, some decent private trackers, download only via SFTP and you should be fine. The other actually safer alternative is to use usenet with ssl activated and time to switch isp's.

I also have never gotten a single letter but I would definitely heed their warning and stop downloading stuff I believe from somewhere I read online that after the third warning it's a call home and if you don't make damn sure you apologize to them through that one the next step is a lawsuit, just get a seedbox or switch providers, I wouldn't take a chance after 3 warnings.

I would quit using public site as they are unsafe unless your using a seedbox which will hide your ip.ipt is also not to safe to use with out a seedbox try to use a site that offers a ssl login, ssl browse and/or ssl download im not saying its 100% safe but is way better than anything else imo.but teh best way to go is to use a seedbox theres a few providers that has plans under $20 bucks just depends how big a HDD of space you want.I wouldnt trust any file from a public site that has been download to your pc

my advice STAY AWAY FROM THE PUBLIC TRACKERS THEY DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD! if your using your home connection to download...........

also this could be why this has happen just a heads up: http://torrentfreak.com/mpaa-riaa-ma...piracy-110623/

    Rules:

    - NEVER ever use public trackers, maybe for some rare old stuff.. where less seeders are... But never use it on popular torrents!
    - Use forced encryption.
    - Search a good private tracker with not too much members... so for example use not Torrentday because it has 1 million members, so you then must think "It has been open for so long time that it is full with spies from RIAA ect..

    Good luck

You are very naive if you think that those "spies" are not even in the top notch trackers :)

Anyway, to answer the OP's question, the best way to protect yourself against your ISP is to setup a VPN. Your ISP will be able to see only an encrypted data stream between your PC and the server. They will be able to measure your bandwidth (see how much you download/upload) but they won't be able to see what you download and from where you download it.

Things are more and more moving from "innocent until proven guilty" towards "guilty until proven innocent".

It doesn't matter if they can't see what you're downloading. Your bandwidth stats are enough and it's up to the user to prove they did nothing wrong... or pay the fine.
