Thread: rTorrent not staying open on my seedbox

I have a seedbox running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with ruTorrent/rTorrent. The client has been working fine since almost a month but today suddenly I got a message in ruTorrent to check if rTorrent is running. I logged into my server via SSH in Terminal from my Mac and when I manually start rtorrent, rutorrent manages to connect but as soon as I close the Terminal it apparently closes since ruTorrent cannot connect anymore.



I am sorry if this is a rather noobish question but I am new to controlling Linux just with Terminal.

Any ideas?

EDIT: Found a workaround by starting rtorrent with screen, then creating another shell with ctrl + a,c and now when I close Terminal, rtorrent stays open. I don't know if that is correct or there's a better way to do it.

There's nothing wrong with the way you have found to do this.

It's just a quirk of how the Ubuntu process ownership (permissions) are structured. Previously you were killing the process (stopping rTorrent) when closing the session. By starting a second session, it works the way you expect.

You can have a script or startup script for rtorrent but screen would do just fine.

Thanks for the responses, guys. Now I'm glad I did the right thing and I'll leave it as it is for the moment.

Just to clear this for future reference:
You said ctlr + a then c but I do


screen rtorrent

You will now see rtorrent working via SSH, then;

Press CTRL + A (same time) then D (only) this will detach from the rtorrent process and leave it running in the background.
