    Default TV Capping

I'm interested in being able to cap TV shows. It might be a way I can contribute to the file sharing community but I'm not yet sure. I don't know anything technical about TVs so I'm asking. How do uploaders record TV shows to their computers?

I guess I should mention I live in the US and Comcast is my provider. They have this box thingy that they gave us to connect to the TV.

the easiest way is to get a usb tv tuner, good brands are hauppage and ati. most of them these days can capture either over-the-air (antenna) broadcasts, or clear QAM from your cable (these are usually only the antenna channels again). if you want to cap shows other than these you're stuck with either using firewire from your cable receiver + CapDVHS or the HD-PVR from hauppage to record over component output. you can use windows media center to record shows, or if you want a more friendly format to edit you should use a different third-party PVR program (npvr, mythtv, sagetv, ...). use videoredo or cuttermaran to cut out commercials, and handbrake or megui to encode the raw stream down to an x264 mkv file.
