Default 720p h.264 mkv file problem

I recently had to reformat due to a power outage that somehow fcked up my Winblows installation and now my videos are not playing correctly. I do not remember my old settings so that's out.

Here is the problem. When I play 720p and 1080p files that are h.264 and mkv in VLC, the video looks more like a flipbook than a video. Still frames, sometimes the video freezes for 5 minutes or more while the audio just keeps on going.

When I play the same file in Media Player Classic, it plays the video slower than the audio. I have tried messing with the cache size in VLC, I have tried to mess with the Audio Time Shift in MPC. I've installed CCCP and K-Lite and none of that changed my problem at all. I've tried more video splitters than I care to count and this is becoming the biggest migraine of my life.

Does anyone have any suggestions that don't involve the above?

That sucks. So you reinstalled windows after formatting? And this computer played the video fine before you had to format?

If so, then your computer is fast enough and nothing should be messed up. It just sounds like settings need to be tweaked. The video stutter, playback speed and sync issues all suggest that the processor is choking. HD H264 + MKV files are processor intensive to play and if your settings aren't tweaked this is not an unusual result.

You've already installed the codecs and the video plays (sort of). So try the suggested tweaks here. This may be enough to get things working. Also leave the player cache on the high end, check that your graphics card driver is up to date and defragment your hard drive if you haven't recently. All of this will help the video play back more efficiently. HTH.

Is it possible that hardware acceleration in the video card was previously being used, but now it isn't? Could be your video card settings, or maybe you need to install the latest nVidia drivers instead of what ships with Windows, etc... something along those lines.

I had a similar problem with 720p videos (that's the max my crappy laptop can handle), because I had to update my video drivers. If you don't know what your GFX card is just right click My Computer > Properties > Device manager. Then you'll get a bunch of drop down things, one of which will be "Display Adapters" (should be somewhat near the top). Expand this choice and there should be one item that says something like NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS. Based on this use google to find the latest drivers for that video card (the manufacturer's site is the best bet)

Here's links to both AMD and nVidia pages for drivers. If that doesn't work let us know.

As previously stated, this reeks of video drivers. Get to your GPU's manufacturer's website and download an updated driver.
