Are you using a RAID-Array configuration as these often cause such problems after reconfiguration.
Does the POST message by the mainboard say it's ok?

Do you have a WinXP boot-cd at hand that you could use booting from? You could try using the repair feature that way.

i tried using the repair feature wait imma type what it said, but it ddint work it was just in an ms-dos screen or something.

the path of file specified is not valid, thats wht it said when i tried to repair :(((

    no raid, just 1 HD

What is the post message on the motherboard, where is that?

    thanks for reply

and i clicked on reinstall windows option, and it viewed my HD as unparitioned :(((

why is that, why would avast do such a thing as delete everything :(

The power on self test (post) checks if there are any hardware issues causing problems related to your mainboard. It can be seen on one of the first booting messages you get after firing up the system.

If that is OK, there has to be something else causing this beside hardware failure. I know it would be highly unlikely to assume a failure, because you just installed that update before :)

But in any case this should be your first check.

Actually I have no idae why such a thing would happen. It definitely shouldn't just by an upgrade. This is huge. :-(

I can imagine though that the update messed with your master boot sector in any way.

Antivirus products check this for viruses on system startup. Probably something went wrong there.

Did you have multiple partitions on your HDD before, or just the one systemroot c:\?

    i have 2 paritions. C and D.

when i typed Dir C: in the windows repair screen it said: the path of file specified is not valid

But when i typed Dir D:, it recognized it and there were a bunch of info written on my screen

all the important files are in this parittion so i hope this is good news that its okay, and XP is installed in parition C

But when i click the reinstall windows option it views my whole hard drive as unpartitioned why is that? :((( hope partition D is alive

admn avast i forgo this update yesterday i hopde i just did the same today :(

OMG!!! okay. i try to reformat but after formatting and XP restarts computer to continue setup, it just returns to the Format step, and does not continue to the other step, WTF did avast do to my computer ?!?!?

get some live cd and after you'll boot from it, try according to situation different repair programs, like partition table doctor, acronis disk director (they're all will try to repair partition table/boot sectors etc) even chkdsk /f could help when you'll be able to see partitions, avz4 for fixing windows internal bootup problems... if you have system restore, you can try it too with erd commander...
    so
1 - you need to see partitions
2 - you need to see them as ntfs
3 - now you're open to a lot of options - file restore, system restore, any repairs.....

im stil having this problem, and when iput the XP CD to do a repair. when i enter recovery console, it does not see the windows installation, and when i try to reformat, it says the HD is unpartitioned but i have 2 partitions in it.

i have UBCD bootable, can it do anything to fix this? i dont know how to use it. can any help please, i dont know what to do.

And sometimes when i reseat the drive, and plug and re plug the SATA cables both on the mobo and the drive, the drive works, but after a few hours or days, the msg, disk boot failure returns.

how come? is that a sign of broken HD? the HD is a WD 700 gb green caviar something like that. and its about 2 years old maybe 3 months shy of being 2 years old. the drive is not noisy too.

okay i figured it out. now recovery console is working, and windows XP logo shows up. i think i had been infected by a boot virus or something cause i followed this guide and the system now sees windows installation and partitions on my drive.

    the guide:
    http://stopmalvertising.com/malware-...ra/Page-2.html

but now my problem is that after XP logo, i get BSOD. i tried this but it does not work:
10 things you can do when Windows XP won't boot | TechRepublic

and if i try to enter safemode it says: Windows XP setup cannot run under safe mode. Setup will restart now

    any ideas?

another thing. last time when i enter recovery console it does not recognize windows and all it says is C:\>, where it should be like this C:\WINDOWS>, which is the state right now. Now i can use fixboot, bootcfg, and all the other tools, but it can seem to use chkdsk properly. when i just put chkdsk it puts up a bunch of numbers and says the "the volume appears to be in good condition and was not checked. use /p if you want to check the volume anyway" But when i do chkdsk /p or /r, it does not do the checking and just runs normal chkdsk, and says the same thing.

    any thoughts?
ill try to do a complete reformat if nothing else works.

okay i disabled auto restart on errors, and now i see the BSOD, and it says IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, anyone know how to fix that?

Scratch everything, after a few hours and restarts, my pc is back to BOOT DISK FAILURE :( i dont know what to do.

Not to rub salt in a wound, but consider making a backup next time. If you had one now it would save you a lot of grief.

First of all, is any of the data on the drive crucial or truly irreplaceable? If so, stop and consider if data recovery is an option. It is very expensive to have it done professionally and difficult to attempt yourself. However, data recovery will be much more successful if done before you mess around with the drive.

Assuming that data recovery isn't an option for you + since you have reason to believe that you had a virus, then don't do anything further until you do a thorough scan for viruses and malware. Ideally take your drive out and slave it to a working computer temporarily so that it is not the boot drive. Then run antivirus and malware scans. Alternately get a bootable antivirus CD with current definitions.

If you still have issues past that, but can get to the recovery console, then, the command line for checkdisk is
    chkdsk drive /p /r

If chkdsk still doesn't work, then you should do some hardware tests
    1. Confirm that your BIOS post message is OK
    2. Go to your drive manufacturer manufacturers web site and download a bootable CD image of their drive diagnostic software. Run the diagnostic
    3. Test your memory. Google will find free bootable CD images of memory diagnostics

If your hardware tests OK, then try to locate a WinXP boot CD and do a repair install., also called an in-place repair install. Google for proper instructions. If you follow the proper steps, it will leave your programs in place and just repair the OS files. The IRQ not less or equal message would usually mean a bad device driver or BIOS or possibly bad memory location, just one reason why were doing various tests earlier. If you could make it to a normal boot, another option would be to press F8 on boot and select last known good configuration from the menu to work around a bad driver.

I hope that you find this general approach helpful. If you run into further issues, anyone trying to help you will need to know the wording of any error messages and a description of exactly what you have done so far to effectively help you.

    Good luck.
