Default Transferring files from a seedbox server

I know there are a couple of old threads about FTP clients but I have a rather very specific question.

So, I've got one of Evoboxes' new "Leaf" VPS plans and I managed to set up my seedbox with Deluge after 6-7 hours of "pure pleasure". I should first mention that the server is running Ubuntu and I have a Mac.

I'm liking the performance of Evoboxes so far but I am definitely not very inspired by my FTP speeds when I try to actually get some files to my PC. I've set up ProFTPd as an FTP server and as a client I tried Panic Transit, which doesn't support segmented downloading and I tried Captain FTP, as well, since it is supposed to support segmented downloading. I get roughly 450kb/s tops with both clients which is kind of disappointing since it's far away from my 25mbps download bandwidth.

So here's what I am thinking:

    1) Since I get the same speed with both FTP clients while one has enabled segmented downloading and the other doesn't, then probably the fault is with ProFTPd on the server side. Can this be true? Should I maybe try vsftpd as a FTP server?

    2) What other options are there to get the files from a server? HTTP downloading the files with Apache gets me just about the same speed. I know there is OpenSSH but I have almost no knowledge about this. Any ideas?

Any help would be greatly appreciated since I am starting to get desperate. What would be the point of the 100mbps seedbox if I have to wait forever to get my files...

P.S. If my thread is more suited for the Seedbox Chit-Chat section, I apologize for creating it here, I just felt my questions were more general.

OpenSSH will be slower than FTP or HTTP as it has more overhead. Are you sure the segmented download client is configured to use several segments? Secondly does segmented downloading via HTTP offer any speedup? ITs entirely possible somewhere along the way you have to pass through a connection stuck at 450 kbps(i had a seedbox with a similar problem, but segmented DL fixed it).

Also i run vsftpd instead of proftpd, i doubt either has very much of a difference unless you configured them that way. I know pulsedMedia had something in their FAQ about the 400 kbps and what they recommened to go faster, maybe Evo has something similar.

barwa, do you mean in the ProFTPd config file?

maltob, yes, segmented downloading is enabled in Captain FTP:

It is a trial version but since the setting is available in the Preferences dialog, I assume it shouldn't matter if it's a trial version or not.

He means in CaptainFTP, also how many segments is it using?

Here's a FSFreak link on setting the number of downloads. Sorry I don't have my Mac with me and i don't usually use a GUI for segmented downloads :P

I found the setting and it does seem to have an effect, albeit a small one. Passive gets me 0.5 MB/s and active 0.6-0.7 MB/s.
The client is using 10 segments like in the screenshot I posted. I tried 20 but there is literally no difference.

Is the server configure to only allow so many connections per IP? (Are all the segments actually being used?)

    Check these settings:
    MaxClientsPerHost
    MaxClientsPerUser
    MaxClients
    MaxConnectionsPerHost

As well as the speed limiter:
    MaxConnectionRate

Finally did you try segmented downloads via HTTP?

installing vsftpd won't solve the problem. Have you tried to download with multiple threads and make sure that your mac can maximize the 25megabit?

maltob, in the /etc/proftpd/proftpd.conf file I could find only the MaxClients option:

    # Limit the maximum number of anonymous logins
    # MaxClients 10

The others are nowhere to be seen.
I've been doing all my FTP testing with a 700mb video file so far and if under "segmented http" you mean splitting it into multiple archives, I still haven't tried that. I don't even have a clue how to do it in Terminal, although I have installed 7zip.

securecrt, by "multiple threads" do you mean "segmented download" or something else? My computer is not the fault, I usually maximize my 25mbits on private trackers.

multiple theads means downloading multiple files at the same time. Some ftp clients support this feature. segmented download is like torrent.
