Thread: Seedbox + Media Server + Storage Server (Ideas and Help Appreciated)

Hey guys fairly new to TI and loving the site, lots of great tutorials and reviews and private tracker info

Okai, so just resonantly I have set-up a seed box running ubuntu 10.10 Desktop edition and I have decided to rework the setup because I am not 100% happy with the way it is setup atm transmission is the client of choice because it was pre installed and easy to configure the web interface and I also setup Rutorrent for awhile wasn't that impressed because I had problems getting torrents from RSS although I'm sure there's a way.

The questions are..

Best Operating environment in you're opinion Windows / Linux? Also I need to have the shares accessible from windows machines I have samba setup but for some strange reason I have had a lot of problems with permissions I cant access from a few laptops but LAN computers seem fine.



Best Torrent Client?

Best Media Server for a xbox360? I'm running ps3mediaserver atm and it seems pretty awesome been able to stream pretty much all media formats and no buffering or any problems.

I also want it to be fairly secure because I want to set it up so I can SSH tunnel from anywhere and be able to upload torrents this will most likely have to be done through a dyndns also because my connection is still dynamic

Just wanted your opinions and maybe what you have setup at home, Thanks in advanced hope I didn't miss anything :)

Both Windows and Linux are equally good but you should go for Windows if you are not experienced with Linux unless you're up for going through trial and error. As for remote access, you could install VNC server for Linux or enable RDP for Windows. VNC is really fast and easy to install. In fact, there is a stickied thread in the tutorials on how to set your VNC server.

The torrent client depends on what you gonna use it for. Deluge is good in the initial period when the torrent is full of leechers. After the first few minutes, you will see the performance going down. Rtorrent is better for long term seeding. However, you will need to find proper configuration for rtorrent because i can tell you, from my experience, the default settings just don't work. You will see some awful performance. Either way, you will have to experiment a bit before building a proper config for your torrent client.

Cant remote because it needs to be accessible from behind a proxy and most ports are blocked but I can SSH over 443 then remote from local network this will also allow me to access it from pretty much anywhere.

Errr .. i haven't read your post .. but it seems you have posted in the wrong section .. this section only contains tutorials ..

although i would take linux over Windows anyway ..
