VLC (and any open-source/free player) is currently NOT able to play full Blu-rays (.iso, BDMV dir, ...) with menus and all the fancy stuff. It is just searching some specific title (I don't know which one exactly) and plays it, sometimes you end up in the movie sometimes not. You can control which title is played, but you will need to search the right one for every Blu-ray. The other possibilities like mentioned above are to remux/reencode the Blu-ray into a .mkv container (you will loose the menus etc, just the movie) or use another not-free player (e.g. ArcSoft Blu-ray player).
Boxee is the answer. Boxee plays all and i mean all files. Only downside is that boxee have some problems sorting metadata(covers etc.), it can be a bit irretating sometimes. Some say that plex is a tat better, but I personally prefer boxee.
