Thread: uTorrent vs. Deluge

Hello this is a newbie question but can you have more then one torrent program on your system not running at the same time.
I ask because both of these programs sound really good to me. I read in the favorite torrent application thread that it the earlier version utorrent was accepted by all trackers but I don't think it could handle the amount of torrents I want to add. deluge sounds like a better bet in the other thread I can't find where it was stated but they said some torrent programs where banned by sites? I hadn't heard that before is deluge? I ask here because this thread is about deluge and utorrent thank you.

Deluge isn't banned at any sites I am a part of. And about the running two different torrent applications, hell, you can run them at the same time. They obviously split up your U/D and such, but it is mostly not a problem.

To answer both questions: every tracker has its own rules as to which clients, and more importantly, which versions of certain torrent clients are allowed, there is no general rule. However, it seems that uTorrent is the least problematic of all available torrent clients to get approved (with few exceptions in the past). One should always check with the rules of the particular tracker, and some precaution is necessary as sometimes your preferred client may turn out to be banned on the tracker you have just joined... Also, certain trackers update their list of approved clients much more slowly than others, keep that in mind. I believe this also accounts for why Deluge seems to be less popular for the following reasons:

1) Deluge is originally a linux torrent client and has to compete with the already well established Transmission. The Windows port of Deluge is even less popular exactly for the reason what it is - port from linux to windows, compared to a client that has been always advertised as being genuinely windows. Also, being a port to windows, it used to have much more bugs than what we currently see. Believe me, this has quite some impact on whether a certain client gets through or not in the tracker rules.

2) To all this add a little bit of bittorrent history: it seems like uTorrent has always been quite popular due to its lightweight and overall stability and simplicity with the only real competitor being Vuze/Azureus that is pretty much the opposite of that and thus often considered to be 'only' for 'power users'. Don´t forget that we have these massive transfers of data via the bittorrent protocol just since the 100mbit stuff became popular, which is really not that far in the past. It is exactly the time of 100mbit+ connections that made Deluge more popular (including the increasing popularity of Linux itslef), for one because many have to compete with these insane monstrous seedboxes of 100 mbit/s and 1 and even 10 gbit/s, and for other because Deluge had the time to catch up.

I guess pretty much every combination of 1) and 2) gives a valid reason

Maybe someone else that has been longer in the torrent world than me could shed more light on the history of these clients.

Deluge's Thin Client also is one hell of a good thing, it is much better to manage your torrents through a program running on your desktop rather than a WebUI. Try once and you will find it weird to use WeBUIs again.

I did a comparrison between Deluge and rutorrent in What.cd, i configured both, one at time on my seedbox and uploaded some torrents on each of them to What.cd. the torrents nature were the same, 320 scene's mp3, Deluge gave much more upload than rutorrent, there were basically the same people with auto-dl scripts who leeched from me.

I too don't know why people keep using clients like rutorrent, transmission and others with Deluge around, that agressive nature on conections makes this client seed beautifully. I ask for this client on every seedbox provider i use, if they don't give it to me i will most likely use some who does.

Regarding torrent history, utorrent was somewhat responsible for the bittorrent protocol massification, when it came out, it was like a light for non-hardcore (and even some hardcore ones) users, it was the first time when you could really install and download something without having to configure or tweak the client to an advanced extent (people liked Azureus for the possibility of total control, but many get lost with too many options), utorrent was also a LOT lighter than their competitors, resource usage was very important.
Soon utorrent became the sandard bittorrent client. Every guide for starting with torrents had a line: "Download utorrent".
Azureus changed it's name to Vuze and tried to become more than a torrent client, making it consume a ton of processing power and even there, you had to configure it properly or you wouldn't be able to download. Other clients like Bittorrent, Torrentflux got stuck on the past, imo, and Transmission is more like a Mac client now.
