For paypal and ebay specifically in Gmail, they have a setting in the Labs section where they'll put a lock next to the email name if it is indeed from paypal or ebay. Currently only works with these two sites though, but it's good to know that if you don't see that lock, you can simply delete it.

I got an email yesterday saying I have 21,000,000 pounds from a dead family member! I'm rich!!!! :p

I never link to my financial sites, like paypal, or my bank and credit card companies, from an email. If I get an email that I think is genuine, I will go to the site from my browser bookmark link. I think this is a good habit to get into.

The gmail spam agent is pretty good though. It is rare that a phishing mail will make it to my inbox.

    Arakasi makes a great point.

If you get an email about your finances via email. Make sure you launch a new Private browsing session and put the website directly into your browser. Links are bad.

Second - No real bank or financial institution is ever going email you about fraud or related issues over email. If your card is being used by someone else - they are going to give you a call.
And they are not going to ask for an personal identifying information - either.
