UN Faces Resistance in Calls for Regulation of Internet

Google Slams Government Monopoly on Governance

by Jason Ditz, December 17, 2010

The United Nations is facing a growing call from a number of nations, including such censorship enthusiasts as China and Saudi Arabia, to establish a world government body to “police” the Internet, with many citing the WikiLeaks releases as the impetus for tighter control.

The “working group” that would be established would include only government officials, and would discuss how to engage in their “international public policy” with regards to the Internet.
The idea does not sit well with a number of privacy activists, as well some high profile businessmen. Vint Cerf, one of Google’s top employees and, decades ago, one of the program managers behind the development of the TCP/IP standard on which the Internet operates, slammed the plan.
We don’t believe governments should be allowed to grant themselves a monopoly on Internet governance,” insisted Cerf, adding that the current, open approach simply works much better and is protecting users from “vested interests.”

To that end Google is said to be supporting a petition calling on the United Nations to back off these attempts at top-down regulation of the Internet and instead support an open, inclusive system.

Don't get me wrong, I love all things Google. I use their cloud extensively. Bing? HA! Don't make me laugh. But.... Google is just a company, who at the end of the day is motivated by self interest. I'm not saying that this isn't positive on Google's part, but we, us, have to be constantly vigilant.

You guys do realize Google and Verizon have made deals to go against net neutrality. Google does everything in it's own best interests, and don't let anything "admirable" they do fool you. They are no less evil than other major corporations.

Well to be fair to Google, they've done a lot of great things for the web and computing in general. But they are after all a profit motivated company, and people should never forget that.

I think it's impressive if you think of what google has achieved in such a short period of time and now is considered more then just a search engine. At the same time you always have to remember what forces that work behind the screens and what the intentions are.

This subject is not for brain stew, so the thread has been moved in the proper section.
