from search and seizure, try TrueCrypt.
Otherwise, just stay off of public torrents and you'll usually be fine. If your paranoid, get a VPN or seedbox.

Encryt data is good way but do you think when you when access your files, like watch a movie, it'll make inconvenient?

This is actually a good question I would like to see answered as well. I have a massive HD collection so its not really feasible to have all this content encrypted as there would be a decent amount of overhead involved in decrypting these files for play. Not to mention if you're streaming large files across your network that are encrypted.

If you're looking to secure a bunch of stored data, not during transfer or on a per-file basis, check out TrueCrypt. It's quite simple to use, and free/open source.

It allows you to create encrypted volumes, basically one big encrypted file of any size that mounts through the software and appears to your system like a removable disk. You can also encrypt an entire hard drive such as your system drive. With that method you just type a password at boot time to unlock the whole thing.

Like others mentioned above, use TrueCrypt and a VPN. Also, always lock your PC whenever you step away (Windows button + L, ctrl+alt+del and press enter, Mac users get MacLoc).

VPN tunnel or seedbox. TrueCrypt is also an alternative but at that point the popo are already at your doorstep.

Interesting thing about TrueCrypt is the use of containers. You can password protect your real container within a fake container but it only looks like one but you have two passwords, the real one and the fake.

Example: You can make the container 1 TB and dump 1 GB worth of (unrelated) files in it but the container is still 1 TB in size including the real container (regardless of the size). You follow?

Just a scenario, in wartime you're being tortured for the container password. You put up a fight and finally submit. Then you give them the fake password (the real container is still hidden). I love TruCrypt.
