Here is my opinion:
While, yes, it is true that illegal downloading and trading of music has had a measureable effect on the recording industries' profit margin; I do not believe it is to the extent that the RIAA would have you believe. I also do not believe it is hitting the actual artist as hard as they would have you believe, but rather the record label. I believe it is the record label who is responsible for most of the raping and pillaging of the artist's wallet. I have heard several times, from several places, that the artist makes most of their money doing concerts and making appearances,because the album and the money made from it, for the most part, goes to the label. While I don't know this to be 100% true, I do believe it. It is my opinion that the structure of the recording industry, itself, is the most detrimental force on the recording industry.
If you feel that I left the start of this kind of vague, that's because I did. I want to hear the opinions of others on the matter...
