    Default IPHONE iOS 4.1

now i just got an IPHONE 3g for $50 off one of my co-workers. she said it was jailbroken. but when she gave it to me it was set at iOS 4.1. for the past few days i've been trying to jb it (don't know if i successfully did or not) using 2 different ones. question is, isn't the firmware suppose to change? still shows that it's running 4.1 but not all icons are there and cydia is installed. i've read on different sites that 4.1 can be jb. but how can you tell if it is or not? anything helps. otherwise i can sell it on ebay and get a hefty profit.

The iPhone 3G can be downgraded to any version of it's operating system that you want, thereby enabling a jailbreak or unlock.

If you are using iTunes 10, you will need to add a custom value to your hosts file, specifically:

    74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com

This will enable you to bypass SHSH checks under iTunes 10, even though your 3G doesn't support them.

You then can restore to any firmware release that you want.

To do so, download the firmware for the phone, and hold "Option/Alt" and click "Restore" within iTunes. That will let you select the firmware file instead of just what Apple says is the Latest.

Once you are done, just jailbreak using any of the methods available and you are good.

Of note, you could also just grab the latest copy of RedSn0w from redsn0w 0.9.6 BETA [iPhone Dev Team] if you are on a Mac and use that to jailbreak your phone. You would need to download the 4.0 firmware release to extract some files as no one has written an updated bundle yet for 4.1, but then you are good.

There are reports that people are using SnowBreeze to jailbreak 4.1, however I have personally managed to dork up my phone in the past using it, so I would rather stay away.

You can tell if it's jailbroken because it will have the cydia icon. If you go into settings > general > about, then scroll down to version, it should say 4.1 (8B117).

I used sn0wbreeze for my ipod touch 2nd gen, worked like a charm , for windows iH8sn0w.com | Jailbreak your iPod touches and iPhones

And like tedwards said use redsn0w 0.9.6 BETA [iPhone Dev Team] for mac, redsn0w works just as well.
