it depends on what you're looking for:
    on photography:

    - manufactured landscapes with Edward Burtynsky ( about a great contemporary art photographer)

    on politics and economy:
    - let's make money
    - Arna’s Childrenof Juliano Mer-Khamis ( on palestinian children, and how they grow up)

    more poetic:
sans soleil of chris marker ( and all of his work infact)
all the work of agnes varda

If you have kids check out "Nursery University" - it's about what parents are willing to do to get their kids into "high quality" day care.

Not exactly on topic, but almost all of the 30 for 30 documentaries on ESPN have been entertaining.

This one I never expected to like, but, it had me in tears at the end... follows a Canadian metal band.

This one here is widly popular at film forums I frequent, having taken courses in criminal justice it was familiar the material so it didn't blow me away...those with biases towards criminals should give this a look.

I have several great documentary recommendations!

    1. Fall From Grace
    2. Deep Water
    3. American Pimp
    4. Children Underground
    5.Cocaine Cowboys

and the best ever..."Frat House" (although that one is difficult to find - I think google actually has it if you do a search)

Netflix instant watch is a great source for good documentaries as well.

I'm ashamed that no one has brought up Ken Burns yet

pretty much everything he's done is amazing

    Jazz
    Baseball
    The War
    Civil War
    The National Parks

Agreed about Ken burns! Although you forgot to include his documentary on Jefferson and Lewis and Clark. Both are really outstanding documentaries. I'm ashamed I didn't include him!
