Default What ways are there to play videos with a PS3?

Hey! The thing is I got a PS3 about 2 months ago and I'd like to use it as a substitute of my already old media player.

I know that I can stream content from the computer to it, but since my router is always overloaded, I'm looking for other options.

    • Is it possible to play a burnt DVD or Blue-ray in it?
    • Is it possible to link it to a normal USB hard disk (FAT32 or NTFS)?

    Thanks!

Yes you can play burnt dvd's on the playstation 3. If the files are dvdrips (usually avi's) you wont have any problem.

    Of course the Ps3 reads blu-ray movies, it's a blu-ray player.

Personnaly, i prefer watching movies off my 4gb sd card, thats cause i have a Fat PS3 with a card reader in it. I assume you have a slim one, so for that purpose, you could use a usb card reader adapter or simply a usb stick. So you put whatever movie you want to watch on the usb stick/ sd card, insert it in your PS3, then go to movies on the XMB, press triangle, then display all. This should show the movies on your usb stick / sd card.

Yes you could also do it with a external usb hard disk, but i've never tried it, so maybe someone else will help you with this one!

    I hope this helps!

I recommend you to download ps3-team 1080p releases, suitable for ps3 you can find on hdme.

I've been able to watch videos and view pictures with my USB stick and hard drive dock on the PS3. Remember, it has to be FAT32 since the PS3 doesn't recognize NTFS (applies to hard drives in enclosures).

Very important! I didn't know that the PS3 only read FAT32. Thanks!

Here's how I've set up my PS3. I have a 2 terabyte external hard drive formatted in FAT32. Won't work unless it's formatted this way. Then you have to create a folder in called "VIDEO" and you could also make one for "PHOTO" and "MUSIC" if you have this type of media too. You need these folders because that's what the PS3 looks for in the hard drive. I've already filled up two-thirds of my drive with blu-ray movies and tv shows. So convenient!

Cool! I didn't know I had to give them particular names :).

    Thanks!

I spent hours looking for a tool to format a large HDD to FAT32 since Windows doesn't seem to like FAT32 anymore. This has been the easiest tool I found to format large capacity drives to FAT32. It takes about 10 seconds and it's very straight-forward.

I didn't really have problems with that, but FAT32 has some uncomfortable limitations, like the fact that files can't exceed 4GB. I know that I can cut them to smaller pieces, but it makes life harder ^^.

Another question: is it possible to use the PS3 directly for torrenting?

    Thanks people :)
