Default Will Afghanistan rebel? Your thoughts.

I read earlier today that Karzai, the newly elected president of Afghanistan, had said behind closed doors that he threatened to join the Taliban if outside pressure to reform were to continue.

Just wondering what are everyone's thoughts on this, and where do you think this could lead to?

'We run this country,' Karzai says of Afghan people - CNN.com

Karzai to lawmakers: ‘I might join the Taliban’ - Afghanistan- msnbc.com

I am also not familiar with Afghanistan's nuclear stance, could someone enlighten me?

Karzai is clearly a complete moron if he makes such a retarded statement. I'm pretty sure he would rather continue to live in his palace under American protection than join the Taliban and live on the run from cave to cave. Nevertheless, if he was stupid enough to make a move like this (very unlikely), his fate will most likely involve being blown into a million pieces by a predator drone.

And regarding their nuclear stance: they are probably several centuries away from achieving any kind of modern infrastructure and technology, so the chances of them successfully pursuing a nuclear program anytime within the next 50 years is pretty much zero.

In regards to the nuclear situation, the worry comes from Pakistan, who is in fact a nuclear state, and in the past year or two has been very unstable. Things are less tense now than they were, but the thought of those nukes getting in the wrong hands is a little bit scary. Once they get them, what do they do with them? Pakistan doesn't have the missiles to hit the US from Pakistan. And a nuclear weapon is never going to make it into the US or onto a plane. If anything, it would only perhaps attack US interests abroad, which also is highly unlikely. Realistically, there's minimal nuclear threat from terrorists.

Karzai is our guy. I agree with a lot of what was said on the Daily Show Monday night. If you have to choose a PITA like Karzai or the Taliban, you take Karzai every time, no matter how crappy he is.

If Pakistan was going to use their nuclear weapons at any point, it would be on India long before they tried to get America. The conflict over Kashmir has both been long and violent, and both countries have access to nuclear weapons, which hopefully would never have to be used.

It's such an unstable country that Western influences are only likely to heighten the instability (is that a word?) of the country.

We in the UK should be looking after matters closer to home rather than there.
