Fear and Loathing immediately springs to mind, also one of the greatest book to film conversions too, what you imagine when reading the book is what you see in the film, awesome. Brave New World also a great book. most interesting book i recently read is called 1421, its about the chinese voyages of discovery which apparently took place before Columbus et al, ie what we learnt about great explorers was a myth and they were following old chinese maps.
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams :D

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move.

One of my all time favorite books is Robert Heinlein's "stranger in a strange land" .
The story focuses on a human raised on Mars and his adaptation to, and understanding of, humans and their culture, which is portrayed as an amplified version of consumerist and media-driven 20th-century America. ~~~wikipedia
I like Daemon and its sequel, Freedom, by Daniel Suarez. They're about a computer program that pulls apart the fabric of modern society and creates a new world order.
Dune Series - Science fiction, you've got war and betrayal.
I am a Sherlockian, so I have to say the complete Canon wich includes all Shcerlock Holmes stories.
