Default gmail now asking for confirmation by sms??

    What the ****??
I was making a gmail account for my dad when all of a sudden google asks for a
confirmation by SMS. So from now on google is ending to be 'free'? I find this very weird. Any one else had that experience? A quick look into the troubleshoot and a read :

If you're trying to sign up for a Google Account, you may be asked to provide a mobile number to verify your identity. We'll send you a verification code via SMS, so make sure the phone you use has text-messaging capabilities. If you don't have a mobile phone and are prompted to enter your phone number, you may want to ask a friend if you can use his or her number to receive a code.

Why am I being asked to provide a mobile number?

We ask some users to verify their identity via SMS before they're able to create accounts in an effort to protect our users and combat abuse of our systems.

We take spam and abuse very seriously, so there are numerous measures we take to block spammers and their messages. Sending verification codes to mobile phones is just one way to address this.

the page I encountered when trying to make the account:

Its probably just to stop bots from signing up to their service.
It won't stop being free, just stopping abuse :)

You know you can just use someone else's phone number if your paranoid.

Anyways, i ran into the new sms rule when trying to make a new account. I temporally didn't have a cell phone so i had to use an old account.

Thanks, the work around works. All you need to do is send an invite to a temporary email like GuerrillaMail.com and you dont need to use sms.

Also on a side note ............. i would rep you
Corynn but cant till i get to the next user level, but for now all i can say is thank you!

Tried it, sent an invite to GuerrillaMail.com, but still asked for sms verification.
