Ha, you're such a old timer. I remember playing StarCraft back when it first came out, that game was so addicting...actually I installed it again not too long ago and was playing it for a bit until I realized how much of my life a 12 year old game was wasting.

On a serious note, I am not sure the OP would even read my post as this thread is months old but recently I have taken a liking to Left 4 Dead 2 (in the shooter department) and Dragon Age: Origins (this game is seriously addicting if you're looking for a newer RPG; at least until Diablo 3 hits the shelves but that'll be in a year). There isn't much in the RTS department that I have noticed; waiting on StarCraft 2 though.

If you're looking for a more serious shooter, I would have to say Crysis is pretty cool story-wise if you like aliens (looking forward to Crysis 2) and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is pretty nice. (Modern Warfare 2 is garbage imho and frankly in the opinion of almost everyone else who knows what a good game is)

I have loved too many games to count and played even more but if I listed them all here: this post would occupy pages so I will leave you with those latest two.

Fallout 1,2, Brotherhood of Steel
NeverWinter Nights 1 with many addons
The Elder Scrolls 2-4
Gothic 1-4
Revenant
Diablo1-2
But if you can run and play Dragon Age and Risen - it will be great!

Play the half life trilogy its amazing and while your at it you should also play Portal Awesome game.

Modern Warfare 2 or any Call of Duty. Their awesome FPS games, and their amazingly addicting :)

You should really try Starcraft:Broodwar. The game is like chess, but in real time. Think of it like this, you're playing chess, but you are not taking turns, that is if your guest is playing quicker than you, he/she can make more moves than you can.
