Do you think it is a good idea to seed to an external HDD? If not why not. I usually do, however I am having 2nd thoughts. If youre seeding to it constantly then you have the drive constantly spinning, surely can't be too good for it.

I have already lost one external within a year of purchase which I believe was from overuse. However I dont think it was the best quality so could have been why.

    What are T-Is thoughts?

Firstly, this post should be in the Help forum.

Secondly, drives are designed to spin, it's not a problem. The only difference between an external drive and an internal drive is that you can quickly walk away with an external drive (in case someone authoritative is knocking at your door). Physically, the drives are identical.

That is what I figured before. However my last external HDD broke within 6 months. Ill just write that off as a not durable hdd though.

There should still be a warranty after 6 months, no? Regular hard drives have 3 year warranties.

I've been wondering about this too, since I planned on downloading directly on the HDD and then seeding from there. I did make a quite minor discovery later though, when I disassembled an external HDD :D - just what s2cuts said, the internal and external drives are the same, the only difference is that the external one is connected to USB and the USB then to your computer. Same goes for the CD/DVD drives. I was wondering though, what about the speed? Is it slower?

Check the speed, also external drivers are prone to heat problems, that may a consideration when using for seeding and thus unrecommended and may reduce the life of your external hdd because of this.

No dude. Torrent seeding is a regular usage type function for any hard drive. I have never seen an external drive sold with a warning to not use for a particular function (like seeding torrents). They may be more prone to heating up because of the small enclosure and that potentially can have an effect on durability, but that's irrelevant of what you do with it.

Im already sending it back, want my £70 returned :D

My main question is whether people generally do seed to external HDDs?

What does it matter? You only buy an external HDD if you need to cart it off quickly. Otherwise, you're just wasting your money. For 70 pounds you should be able to easily buy an internal 1.5TB drive, and have enough left over for lunch. How big is your external?

Hi I also been thinking about this issue before. Great that someone brings it up here. I prefer to seed from internal hard-disk and not external hard-disk as I have the assumption that it might be a bit faster while downloading and uploding Not too sure whether I am correct....
