This one does not have a fan...
First link by Google:
http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.js...ontentOverview
It says 7200 RPM, that means barracuda 11 or 12 series. I am sure I don't have to say anything about 11th series and its reliabilityThe 12th series seams to be better, but still too hot for an external enclosure, imho, of course.
My recommendation is not to use it for 24/7/365 operation.
If you need an external HDD, get something based on WD EADS series. They seam to be the best choice for external operation (even without active cooling :)) Again, imho.
It isnt on 24/7. It does get shut off fora few hours a day, dont think this will be enough though.
Which do you recommend with active cooling?

I would buy enclosure separately from the HDD... But it is just me :). Any enclosure with active cooling will be relatively big... My personal preference, is something like Newegg.com - Galaxy METAL GEAR 3500MGB-RAID V2 Aluminum 2 x 3.5" USB 2.0 & 1394 External Enclosure - External Enclosures (I have the same thing under a different brand, all white :001_smile:), can have two 3.5" discs, separately or in RAID0 or RAID1 configuration. I use it in RAID1. But anything you like from this list, as long as you like comments and it has a fan :) Newegg.com - Computer Hardware,Computer Accessories,External Enclosures,3.5"
good luck :001_smile:
Final n00b question. If I buy an external case, am I going to be able to replace the case thats alrready on my external HDD?
Also the link you sent me, do you have that enclosure as its been given awful reviews.

1. Depends on your case :) If you can take your SATA drive out, you can put it in another case :)
2. As I said, I have the same case as in the link, but mine was sold under a different brand... Now, they *look* almost the same (mine has white aluminum finish on the top part). They have the same specs. Maybe, just maybe, they *might* have different firmwares... There is no way to tell... I have had no problems with mine. But the only reason I got this particular case, is because it had RAID1 function, and I used it to store backups, before it moved to torrent duties :001_smile: If you do not intend to use two drives in RAID1 in this case, by all means, get the one capable of holding one HDD. There are more options, and the case will be cheaper :) Just make sure it has a fan :)
I think Ill just get one, first need to see if I can remove it. CBA right now, my drive is pretty new, so its not going to bust on me yet :).
