Default Global Warming - Is it a Crock? .. Do bears #$#@ in the woods?

    Ok people

Im not sure if im being a complete moron or the next Einstein, but hear me out. Recently my family have been talking about global warming. How the human population has wrought destruction and mayhem and delicious Mcgridles down upon the earth.

.. and im sitting there thinking WTF?

To me global warming is a utter scam. I looked into it about a year ago when the entire global warming news took off like a bat outa hell. (meatloaf you rock) What I discoverd is that volcano's put more pollution and crap in the air then the entire human population can in 100 years. That 50 years ago... Scientist thought we were in the middle of the next Ice age... but now .. we are melting.. because that makes sense.

My personal thought and maybe juuusst maybe ignorant thought is that we havent had a big enough sample of data to really give a clear cut answer. I believe the Earth Warms and Cools in a natural cycle. That all the global warming news is getting thrown a little out of hand.

Its like the whole Y2K bug.. what the shit did that do? I was in my basement holding onto my pop tarts and jolt cola with dear life.. and what happens?.. nothing.

So people what are your thoughts? could I have a point? or am i just another idiot with a keyboard lol ^^

    ..

Seems you are the latter my friend :). Lately scientists have been arguing just that, that (for the most part) global warming and cooling is caused by natural cycles and not so much by human intervention. Humans do take part in it but to little extent: Global Warming Man Made or Natural Cycle?
It doesnt mean we shouldnt stop emitting pollution though as global warming isnt the only harm caused by it.

Global Warming is real. It's called "Climate Change" now by the way. Something like 90% of experts in the field of climate change research believe that it is real and it is happening. There are graphs out there and data as proof that we are adding to the problem. Not all of the green house gases are from us, but we are influencing it nonetheless. For you to not believe the experts and scientists who pretty much unanimously agree apon this issue and choose to believe some politician or something that you hear is just stupidity.

RonWD, do not call someone's opinion stupid. Flaming is not tolerated here. Healthy debate is fine but I will not tolerate personal attacks.

    Keep it clean, people.

then what do you say about the 50 year old news articles from scientists saying that we are going to be catapulted into the next ice age?

Im not saying we have no part in the earth warming but to say that global warming is because of the human race alone is absurd. Scientist have been wrong in the past it happens sometimes. We simply dont have enough data on the earth to know its warming and cooling cycles. This could be completely normal

And al gore sckhew's the truth like no other man in the world. Alot of his so called facts are rubish. I read 2-3 articles debunking alot of his views that both are practicle and made sense. Just because the man made a video doesnt mean its true.

people.. you can argue with me all you want. That I really dont mind ^^ I am by no means a scientist and I admit that i dont have the facts. These are opinions of mine and a couple dozen articles I have read on the subject.

    thanks for the replys people.

HOW DARE YOU OPPOSE THE EXPERTS!!

lol. No, no. The truth is that it is perfectly fine to disagree with popular scientific opinion. It isn't the great scientific minds of our time who tell us that we shouldn't challenge their opinions, it is the media that cultures us into believing that we must hold the opinion of someone with a PhD to be higher than our own.

It amazes me how many people claim that they are "scientists", yet fail to understand the single most basic principle of science. Namely, the fact that theories are revisable. They can be challenged, proven wrong, and even changed. And that's ok. It's not against the rules. It isn't back-pedaling or side-stepping - that's just how the process works.

Why would scientists publish papers 50 years ago claiming we are entering the next ice age and now claim that we are entering a heat wave? Because the evidence back then pointed towards an ice age and the evidence today points towards a heat wave. It's really that simple. There is no scam or conspiracy. Science says that it is ok to be wrong, and that when you are wrong, it is ok to change your opinion. And yes, it is only an opinion - not a fact like some people would like you to believe.

The truth is, science never really claims to know anything. It is merely a paradigm that suggests we should attempt to make observations and use those observations to speculate about how the universe works. It's better than previous knowledge paradigms, but it is still inherently flawed. After all, we cannot know for certain that what we perceive as reality is even reality at all. We are merely interpreting we can, based off our past experience. For this reason alone, I think that a good "scientist" or perhaps what I would call a good "thinker" is someone who can accept multiple knowledge-seeking paradigms (including those that contradict science itself) and evaluate all of their validity simultaneously. Perhaps one day, our modern view of science will be shown to be a flawed paradigm, just as our previous attempts at seeking knowledge. Until then, it's the best we've got.

So, to address your questions a bit more directly (though perhaps not the way you wanted).

Is "climate change" real? Quite possibly.

Is it man-made? Nobody knows and there is a ton of debate surrounding this no matter what you hear on the news.

Is this all a scam? Probably not. Scientists don't usually get together and decide to get a laugh at the public's expense by providing fake theories. The media may have blown it out of proportion, but that doesn't make it a scam. But remember, anything you hear is just an opinion based on evidence. Evidence can be misinterpreted. Things can be recorded as evidence that aren't even relevant at all, and people still think it is. It can be measured incorrectly or what's measured might not even be what we think it is. So many things can go wrong. PhD's are people too! They've just had more school than most of the general public.

Should we adjust our habits as a society? If we wish to continue existing - probably. Nature is perfect. Humans are a part of nature. Humans are not perfect. Humans have a tendency towards self-destruction. Nature lets things die when they are no longer suitable to their environment. Figure it out. Humans like to think that we are in a "battle against nature". But there is no such battle. There is only the battle against ourselves. We are nature.

Do scientists know ...... ? No. Scientists do not know anything. And I mean that seriously. Nobody really knows anything. We are all just observers of what nature has decided to show us.

Anyway, I could really write hundreds of pages about any of the points I've just made, so they may not all make sense to you or they may come across as shallow or unsupported because I've not developed them here with enough depth. However, I do hope that I was able to get my point across in so few words.

In the words of the great philosopher Socrates, "all I know, is that I know nothing".

Take care. And never stop challenging the existing knowledge structure! It is only through questioning that we are able to arrive at new and better ideas and develop knowledge paradigms that will allow us to arrive at something closer to truth.

I haven't read anyone elses post but this is what i will say.

Global Warming or Climate Change is real it's in effect, one of the smallest countries in the world is under threat of being wiped out as it's only 1.5m above sea level now.

Here in Australia we are having odd weather seasons and massive floods one day than fires the next. If you think it's not happening you need to open your eyes..

It will eventually eat our world up but that's probably in a good 2-3 thousand years.

I don't sit down and worry because well i won't be around and my kids won't and by then Korea will nuke the world and it will be non-existent anyway.

global warming is part of the climate change cycle. if you look at a wide enough spectrum of data you will see it that is slowly rises and falls. also if it is so called global warming it will eventually melt enough of the polar ice caps to stop the natural ocean currents witch are cause by warm and cool water traveling. if you upset that with too much cool the conveyor belt stops and all of a sudden we are in just the opposite a ice age .and it is just that a cycle. wow!
