Default Ask the (soon to be) Doc: ENT

Background: So, I'm new to this forum and I have an exam in otorhinolaryngology soon (say it in succession 10 times really fast :) or as they call it in the states: ENT (ear nose throat).

I'm going to cut to the chase here: Since I always like to have a couple of actual clinical cases to work on and learn from while studying, and you guys probably have some questions about this and that condition, that you or someone close to you has - you can ask me!
On top of that, if you just want help finding information about it and if you don't know where to start looking or you're just lazy or whatever; you can ask me!

Anything goes really, symptoms, diagnosis, prognosis, you name it. Also, if privacy (although it doesn't get much more private than this forum I guess) is an issue, you can contact me via PM.

Hope we get the ball rolling on this one! Fire away :001_smile:

Hey thanks guys! As promised I'm reporting back that I passed the exam with flying colors! Thanks for the numerically minimal but extremenly meaningful support! :)

I would just like to say that the offer still stands, and it will remain so as long as technically feasible.

If you have any problems in the ear, nose or throat region, and would like to know more about it, send a pm and I'll help you as best I can.

I do, in fact, hope that I receive as little messages as possible, as I don't want any of you guys to be sick and in need of help. But if there is ever such a situation, know that you can just let me know.

This is the height of irresponsibility for anyone considering going into health care. What if someone who isn't feeling well decides that it's not serious enough to see a doctor, and instead posts a question to you? How fast can you reply? How well can you take a history on a forum? What if it turns out to be serious, and the delay causes some irreversible damage or worse?

You're opening post should at least warn people that they should seek real medical attention if they don't feel well. My mind reels at the ass fucking that lawyers would give to the site owner if something ever went astray.

    Two questions:

What can I do for post nasal drip naturally without a prescription, me and my bro have it pretty bad. I can actually hear it dripping when i'm laying on my back.

Is there any REAL progress on tinnitus yet, or are we all still pretty much screwed? :)

ok, I lied... question 3: is there any way to reduce a nasally voice, or does that coincide with having post nasal drip?

    thanks!

Well wbeston84, the only thing, IMO, that you can naturally do to prevent post nasal drip, is to drink plenty of water to keep the mucous thin. There are some other remedies noted here: http://health.howstuffworks.com/home....htm/printable, but I cannot vouch for them.

It might be a good idea to go for prescription in your case, as it seems to deteriorate your quality of life somewhat. A combination of decongestant and antihistaminic drug would do the trick, and you should ask your physician for further information regarding this.

Regarding tinnitus: You're not necessarily screwed (medical management may help in more than 50% of tinnitus cases), but tinnitus is a very broad term and there are many pathologies that can lead to it, therefore I implore you to seek out medical help for further information. I am unable to do a clinical examination and other tests virtually (maybe soon if technology gods are willing), so I can't say much about that.

Regarding s2cuts post: I count on people having some common sense and not coming here with a temporal bone fracture and associated liquorrhea. So far questions have been related to things like nose breathing and allergy related symptoms, which is what I was expecting. I also believe that the ENT region is such, that if the pathology is severe, the symptoms themselves are extremely debilitating and someone unlucky to have such symptoms would not consider posting here prior to going to a doctor. It's a forum, for God's sake.

You want to be a doctor? Then this is irresponsible beyond belief. You're assuming people have a clue as to your limited capabilities. I think this thread should be closed on the threat of liability alone.

Maybe at this point a mod should weigh in.

This could become a serious liability for the forum.
