They are both good, they are each cool in different situations, so you cant judge easily !

I think External HDD's are in the 5+ TB range now, so saying that the 256Gig flash drive might change your opinion is silly. I always will vote for HDD.

HDD, you get way more space for the money, and they don't have some of the issues (maximum number of writes) that flash drives have. I do love small flash drives for transferring data, but the large ones just haven't been proven enough for me yet.
External are better for the simple reason of size. 1tb compared to 256gigs is a big difference. The only thing flash has its size comparison..
They both have good uses and benefits. With the flash drive, you get portability. With an external HDD, you get space. I have both. I use the flash drive when I need to take files to and from my home and my college. I have a 1.5 TB external HDD for storage (which I only have ~100 gb left so I need to buy a new one soon).
Get a Seagate Freeagent Go.
