I actually like the idea of only the staff know for privacy. But your idea is also interesting.
Good idea, not sure there's a vB modification that does that though.
It is possible to add the reason in brackets near to a name. Simply having renamed, if it forum means do not allow

Maybe the easiest thing would be to have the "Banned" under the name link to the banlist (Torrent Invites! Get your free private tracker invites right here! - Banned Users) ?

This site is unique with the banlist. Other sites dont have it which confuses users on why a person got banned. Nice job staff :)
