    Default DVD Players with USB

I hate watching anything on my PC so I always have to transfer to disc to watch on my TV. Anything I will rewatch I put on a regular DVD but one time watches (TV episodes) I put on DVD/RW.

I used to have a DVD player that played DvX from USB but it burned out after a few months (power supply I think). It was great because it was very fast to put the files on the USB (no fuss, no muss).

With the new TV season coming I was think of getting another one. A quick search suggests the Philips 5990 may be a good pick (available in Canada, $69, USB 2 - can power a 2.5" HDD, and some good firmware hacks available (40 character file names)). I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations.

I referred to videohelp.com, it has good list of players and reviews

I use Philips DVP 5960. It is a solid player but had some files playback a bit choppy during snowy, water scenes(only for divx, xvid files). JPEG playback is too slow
But good overall, saves me from burning to CD/DVDs when i could plug any thumbdrive

    Does it play mkv files?

You can't go wrong with the newer philips DVD DivX Ultra players. I own 3 of them and they play all the .avi files you throw in them.
