Of course it has to have a good battery, full qwerty keyboard, big screen, good camera, and last but not least.. IT WORKS!

My phone is like a laptop to me, so I want advanced and broad functionality. The iPhone, after a jailbreak is the perfect example: it has all the basic stuff, replaces my old iPod Touch and through it's bash shell I can even remotely manage my server and laptop over SSH. Gotta love it.
i use my phone for calling purpose , thats the main reason .
not much of sms guy .
so i really look for a good battery life and main this a call quality .
simple
I look for compatibility, camera megapixels, GUI, OS, and whether or not its easy to text or not.
Functionality and durability.
I like Blackberry for these exact qualities. I tried out a touch screen based phone for a while, but they are far from durable. I left it in a car during winter for a few hours and the touch sensitivity died. The LCD worked fine, but it was rendered useless as there was no other way to use the phone other than by touching the screen.
