Default Best way to watch .mkv? with PS3?!

I was just curious what was the best way to watch x264 (.mkv files) on the PS3, especially when they are larger than 4GB?

I googled for some answers, but they I couldn't find answers relevant to the PS3 new firmware 2.60, which has divx playback ability via USB support.

so, i was just wondering what is the best way to watch .mkv files larger than 4gb?
    - with PS3?
    - with media player (like western digital media player w/ HD support?

in general, what equipment (specs, if possible) and how much u spent?

Currently, I use my PS3 to watch divx and sometimes stream using Nero 8 MediaHome on my custom built P4 3.2GHz w/ 1.5 gigs of ram to my new Vizio 42" Full 1080P HDTV (from costco at $599.99). When using Nero 8 streaming methods with .MP4 (x264) files, it lags, so that is when I use USB.

    tenten,

man, that thing is a sexy little beast and the interface is extremely nice, according to the website you provided. However, I don't think I want to spend $400 just yet. I think I will continue to do some research on the PS3 and hope they have some type of hacks similar to the TVIX HD M-6500A- i wish the PS3 would allow Linux to use the PS3's graphics accelerator...

Thanks for the suggestion and I will most definitely keep an eye on the TIVX and hope prices start to come down... ;)

I use the western digital HD player and it's magnificent. It's cheap, very small, completely silent and plays every hd-movie (and divx-movies) without a hestitation. There are two downsides:
    - no network, so you always have to connect your external harddisk to the player
    - for (DTS) sound you have to connect it to your homecinemaset with an optical cable.
But the price (less than € 100) and quality make this thing worth buying!
Thanx trc13, Balauru, pjkp20 and reksat for inviting me to the best trackers!

The Western Digital Media does seem like a great choice, especially right now, after attempting to watch "Dark Knight" & "May Payne" in h.264 1080p blu-ray rip in .mkv format on my computer:
    - Pentium 4 3.2 GHz CPU
    - 1.5gb RAM
    - ATI AIW 9800 (all updated with latest cataylst drivers & ATI multimedia center)
    - WinXP Pro
The computer was playing the movies to choppy...

I also tried on my sony laptop, which has
    - Centrino Duo (1.6ghz)
    - 1gb RAM
    - nVidia 7400
    - WinXP Pro
This was also playing the two movies choppy

With both computers, I tried to run VLC, GOM Player (w/ DTS+AC3 Filter), KMPlayer, and trying different decoder software such as CoreAVC Professional Edition & Haali Media Splitter (for Windows Media Player)... still no luck...

What kind of PC's are you guys running to play your h.264 1080p .mkv's???

XenonMKV has been a life saver for me, it won't do over 4gb, and it ouputs MP4's.
