I say go for 30 days without it. People uselly say 3 days is enough to get rid of a habit if it's passive, don't require effort from your side to maintain like going to the gym. Though 3 days is a good start, but it seems like people after that begins thing about it again when doing certain stuff and as they passed the "3 days" they feel safe and this is uselly where they are the weakiest.

This TED talks about it though it dosn't get into bad habits as fare I remember: ‪Matt Cutts: Try something new for 30 days‬‏ - YouTubeAlso get a friend that you can call when ever you are about to smoke.

I am a proud ex-smoker! I was smoking for 10 years and I've quit for 20 months now! Never been better!

I thought that I couldn't live without smoking, I was that addicted to it, but now I feel free because everything I did was somehow connected to it. Meaning, yeah, I 'll cook, but first I 'll smoke a cigarette, yeah, I 'll go swimming, but first I'll smoke a cigarette, yeah, I 'll go to work, but I'll wake 1 hour earlier to smoke 3 cigarettes and drink my coffe. I think that besides having a better health, I also saved much time doing things I really love, and most of all I saved time to be with my family and friends, and not being outside smoking.
    ... the end.
