Ethics is one of the core things in a Society and even though it can be debated how we would able to maintain a society with other system then money I highly doubt anyone would argue that a society can live without ethics and moral. This is coming from a socialisttic point of view, but capitalism most cruel side is when we begin to priorities money before humans.

The example you mentioned I would think taking the custom who reserved the phone would be the best picked even from a buisiness perspective. Cheating the custom who resvered the phone will give a bad rep both among his friend, but also on online reviews. This will in the end cost him money. Saying that this might be one outstanding situation, but if he's really to make this decision the first time chances are he will make it the next time which will result in 2 unsatificed customers and at some point his reputation will spread and the snowball effect has started.

In USA I have a friend, we're not really close and we mostly just read each others journals to keep up with what's going on in the other ones life, I still like her, she's a nice person.

A few weeks ago, she got the news that she's got a really bad cancer and is in need of treatments, something she can't possibly afford. I hadn't followed her journal for a long while, mostly because I hadn't had time since I started a new job.. My wallet isn't the thickest, and her medical bills are huge. I should have saved my last cash then for bills. Instead I donated it to her. It wasn't even a tenth of what she needs, but it was the last cash I had. And when my next pay comes, I know I'll send more her way. Because if I don't, no matter how much I need that money myself, I know my conscience will cave in over me and pull me to shreds because I'm not doing something for a fellow human.

When it comes to Ethics over all, I'm not one to be boasting on being a good human. Mostly I tell people "you got yourself in, now get yourself out.", Mainly because I believe that fighting on your own makes you stronger, and if you're always given a hand you'll never know your own strength, nor will you find it inside or let it grow. For that people call me callous and cold hearted. Because it's not the correct moral way to act. However I'm not sure I believe in ethics or morals, since it's all subject for interpretations of the sole individual and how he/she wiches to live their lives according to their own philosophies.
But I don't believe that money, a worldly piece of paper with no actual value unless you make it worth something, ought to be put before a proper treatment of fellow men and women. Even if I have my days when I think that all people are worthless slime and ought to be extinguished from the face of the earth (that's the pessimist in me that's gotten a overdose of drunk idiots visiting the bar I work at.) I still cherish the individual and their rights and obligations for freedom to choose for themselves how to act and react to any kind of situations, moral and other.

But you're also always free to make a third or fourth choice, there are always more paths to choose from in every situation, even if their not presented to you heads on.

Those who obtain money by unethical means rarely find solace in their riches or lose it just as fast as they gained it. Luckily, money and ethics are not mutually exclusive.

Well, I have always had very strong ethics, and as of late, I have realized that other people have advanced and I have been left behind because they are willing to do things that I would not. In addition, the high standards that I have have put me in conflict with most people, who generally have low standards (at work, in general). So I am starting to rethink the whole ethics/principles thing. For all my high morals, I have shit to show for it. I'm at the point where I am willing to do whatever it takes to gain success (nothing illegal of course). So if I have to bend/compromise my morals/ethics to achieve what I want and what I believe I deserve, then i'm probably going to start doing that.
