Internet Service Providers that restrict the speed of file sharers' Internet connection have got a new opponent. Google is now joining a new project which can expose your ISP for slowing down your connection while file sharing.
The organizations New America Foundation´s Open Technology Institute and Planetlab Consortium have started a service called Measurement Lab, or M-lab. On their site, normal Internet users can see if their ISPs are restricting their connection speed while file sharing.
M-lab has a Java application called Glasnost which compares the speed between normal Internet traffic and bittorrent traffic. Within minutes, the application can tell whether your ISP is restricting file sharing speed or not.
To be able to run the project, Google has donated 36 servers to M-lab, placed throughout the USA and Europe. Google is also helping out with network connections for the servers, as Google reports in its news blog. M-labs will need Google's servers since their service for measuring bittorrent speeds is immensely popular, unfortunately resulting in the servers being overburdened at times.
All data that is collected through the use of the project will be used for scientific purposes to find out if ISPs choose to prioritise certain types of Internet traffic.
Among the members of the committee that is running the project is Vint Cerf, most notably known as the father of the Internet, and is presently a google employee.
Both Vint Cerf and Google are known for their involvement in Internet neutrality, meaning that all types of traffic should have the same rights.
Visit Measurement Lab and see if your Internet Service Provider is restricting your bittorrent traffic.
Edit: I should have posted this in the Bittorrent Discussion section.
