Default A new MMORPG where death is permanent

There Is Real Death In This Video Game

Death, along with taxes, is one of only two certainties in life. Yet in games, death is never really death. Its just a speed bump. In this game, though, death is death, and it is final.
I'm really looking forward to this game - original ideas, and free-to-play! I've never paid a subscription for a game, and never intend to.

A game with a permanent death can sound original/promising/hardcore but can hardly be fun to play. All the games that so far promised permanent death introduced something like: "you can buy insurance and in case you die your relative (son/whatever) will get money", after that you just rebuy all your gear with insurance money and go on playing with your "new" character like nothing happened.

Demon's Soul on the PS3 managed to do it - and it's still got a fairly large player base. The game is unusually hard from the very beginning. Death is permanent insofar as you lose all recent progress, and the game even get harder after death when you're forced to play in 'Soul' form.

I think a hardcore perma-death game can have huge draw. The first game I can remember where hardcore mode was popular is Diablo II. People are still playing, putting tons of time and effort into playing those characters without any type of insurance against death.

If the game is fun enough and has enough replay value, people will buy it and spend time playing.

There is this kind of mode in Dofus, a very popular MMORPG in my country (France). Anyway I would love to try it, it must be so stressful (in a good way), but nobody would try PvP haha and if I loose my character at an high level I would be devastated but anyway, I will read more about that game :D

You would waste too much time with that game. I think they would make it so it's really hard to die

Back then I remember playing diablo 2 hardcore mode, where death = starting a new character. While there are a dedicated community to hardcode mode, but it is by far a small percentage of the total user base, so I am not sure whether a game that have permanent death as a compulsory feature would be popular.
