Well, the only site I can vouch for is Pokerstars since it's the only site I play on. I've tried others, but I think Stars is the overall winner. In my humble opinion, it has the best interface, choice of games, customer service, and the tables are always well stocked! If I ever become good enough to do it full time, I'd play on Full Tilt Poker as well since it offers some pretty good software and playing environment as well.
I recommend trying the smaller sites, as the competition is waaaaaay softer. I also play at the bigger sites sometimes but only when I want to play games other than No-Limit Holdem, or off peak-hours, when I can't find games on the smaller sites. If you live in the US you're kind of strapped though because of the Online Gambling Legislation. That's actually why PokerStars and FullTilt are so big. They are 2 of the few sites that defied the legislation and accepted US players. (Admittedly they do have great software too...).
Also if you're going to sign up for an online site, MAKE SURE you do it through an affiliate, and get RAKEBACK. That's where you have a pre-arranged agreement with the site that they will pay you 1/3 of your rake back every couple of weeks (rake is the money you pay out of every pot to the casino) . If you play any quantity at all, that adds up real fast, and if you sign up directly at the site, they will often refuse to give it to you, as they think that they already have your business.
