Any suggestions for a good recent single-player RPG?
To give an idea of what I'm looking for, the last one I played and really enjoyed is The witcher: some action (but not Diablo-like hack'n'slash), and a good story.

Final Fantasy?? I think it's pretty good
Final Fantasy is great, but it's not really much of an RPG anymore.
I love the Fable series, couldn't play all of them cos I don't have an xbox :/ Great games though, probably the best that Microsoft's produced (not a Halo fan here ;)
Mass Effect 2 was slightly actiony, but still great in terms of char-development, story and non-linearity.
Dragon Age is the successor to Baldurs Gate, as above it has great char, skill and story development. The gameplay is extremely fun too :)
I also love the Bioshock series, again, more fps/action than rpg...
I haven't tried The Witched, so I'll have to give that a go ^^ You should definitely try DA and ME2, both absolutely awesome games! :)

Half Angel, half Demon, has fear of the Gods and is feared by the mortals The Veritas is the truth and only truth. No blade can turn him from his way, no wind is strong enough to stop him. Watching from above, he knows everything. He is NOT the greatest but the mightiest, the awesome Exalted !!!
Hey OP, the closest games to the Witcher that you'll find are Oblivion, Dragon Age and Neverwinter Nights 2. After that games get a little more divergent.
Fable is similar (setting, solid combination of story, action, make your own fun), but the gameplay and tone of the world are very different.
Mass Effect has a very different setting and borders more on FPS than RPG. It's also very linear compared with a game like Oblivion.
In a similar way, Fallout 3 is like Mass Effect in the fact that it relies on shooter mechanics instead of hack and slash mechanics. The difference between ME and Fallout 3, is that Fallout has much deeper RPG elements (character, item, stat customization and building) and a much richer world. Mass Effect is a more linear game, Fallout 3 is more open world/sandbox.
The Baldur's Gate series and first Neverwinter Nights (Black Isle published) games are very different. They are more akin to a paper and pencil D&D game translated directly to a video game. More strategy and less hack and slash. Still really fun, just a different experience, I'd check them out if you enjoyed Witcher/Oblivion/Neverwinter Nights 2.
If you're into quirky fantasy RPGs like The Witcher, you might be interested in Arx Fatalis.
It's going for $5.99 on GoG.com right now: Arx Fatalis - GOG.com

Thanks everybody! Unfortunately I have only a PC, so it looks like Fable is out of reach. I played Arx Fatalis looong ago :)
From your suggestions, I think I'll give Dragon Age a second chance. I got it a few monts ago, but did abandoned it almost immediately.
By the way... is anyone here old enough to know the Ultima series? Ultima VII part 2 and Ultima underworld 2 remain my all-time favourites :)
There is something called Sacred which is really close to the diablo genre. Same camera angles, gameplay, etc except it's a bit more recent. They had two expansions come out for the game, I think that says they had some success.
Retired and happy :)
The most memorable single player rpg for me was Planescape Torment. Fantastic story, not too much fighting but enough. hmm, just thinking about it...I may have to dig this one up again. There is some good comedy in this game too.
Some others (classics)
Fallout 1&2
Icewind Dale
Baldurs Gate
...just my top 3, er 4.
And yes I ultima starting ultima 3 when the graphics were updated to EGA. The 6th and 7th (+serpent isle and forge) are the best, by far! Eight was okay, and nine was a disaster. I believe most if not all of them are being remade.
That reminds me, starcontrol 2. awesome classis as well.
