There are actually a bunch of good games out for the PS3 exclusively. Off the top of my head there is
Metal Gear Solid 4(a must have if you enjoy cinematic like game play)
Infamous (think GTA meets Crackdown... with electric powers!)
Ratchet & Clank (a really good platformer series)
MLB The Show (hands down best baseball game on the market today)
Little Big Planet (just amazingly fun)
Valkryria Chronicles
Demon Soul (extremely hard game, you will feel like you accomplished something after beating it)
Heavenly Blade
Noby Noby Boy
Flower
As for what it can do, well it is still one of the better bluray players on the market, you can do streaming and then you can DL PS & PS2 games from online. It really is a good system to own and contrary to popular belief the newer models especially don't run as hot and are a lot more reliable than an Xbox 360.

I'm surprised rockband wasn't mentioned. Personally it's one of my favorite console game of all time, i've wasted many hours of my life playing it without getting bored. And they are always releasing new songs.
I'll also suggest Little Big Planet, which is just really fun.
Pick up Uncharted 2 and then pick MGS4 (one of the best games i have ever played).
Get a blue ray dvd, and enjoy a great blue ray player.

I also recently purchased a PS3 and bought UFC 2009: Undisputed along with it. Not sure I would recommend it though. I mean, it's fun and all, but since I'm such a hardcore MMA fan I can see so many flaws that annoy me about the gameplay. If you're just looking to enjoy the fun and don't care about the minor details than I guess I'd say "go buy it". But, I'd probably wait for UFC 2010 to come out sometime next year. Or the EA Sports MMA game (I am definitely getting it) that's supposed to be released in September of 2010.
I don't have any other games at the moment. I bought it mainly for the Blu-ray anyways. Not much of a gamer. I like to play my FPS on my PC through steam. Even though I really suck and rarely play. Hah. What can I say? I'm too busy torrenting and watching shit.
