If I were you, I'd wait for one of Steam's marvelous sales (since I'm assuming you missed the one on thanksgiving weekend). L4D2 looks like a great game, but if you're not sure of the purchase, wait till it's a bargain!

As an owner of both L4D1 and L4D2, I'm pretty content with purchasing L4D2 as Valve did an awesome job on topping its predecessor. The campaigns are much more different and the overall game has a lot of variety so it does not feel like you're playing L4D1 over again. The new game modes, weapons, special infected have at first overwhelmed me since there's so much to choose from.
If you're still on the fence of whether or not you want to buy it, Amazon has it on sale for 30$ for the PC version and 40$ for the 360 version.
I was one of the people that never bought L4D1, me and my friends tried to play it cracked. Like a previous poster eluded to, there is no proper way to do this, it was incredibly unstable and most of the time was completely broken. When L4D2 was coming up we decided to get it to avoid all those problems. I really believe it was worth the $50 price tag, but I can't completely relate to the OPs POV because I did not buy the first.
For me, L4D2 isn't a game that I will play consistently, it is something my friends and I will spontaneously play on a Saturday afternoon for 6 or 7 hours while we LAN up and can scream at each other.
Hope this helps.
havent played l4d1 but l4d2 is a great game.. no two ways about it. awesome online play and it betters the original in almost all aspects. having said that, i still hate steam x-(.. is anyone playing this on garena?

It's a good game but not worth the steep price...feels like an add-on instead of a new game.
The game is great in my opinion, I would not think twice to buy the original, if I had the money. I'm downloading a proper release atm, I just hope it'll work right, since some people reported a lot of crash and other issues with a cracked game.
To the topic at hand:
L4D2 is a completely new game (and I was part of the initial L4D2 boycott) and therefore it comes with a complete new experience. BUT I think it's only worth it if you buy it with 4 friends in one of these sales (the sale of a couple of days ago left it at 17€ each copy).
