Someone explain Minecraft to me
I keep hearing about Minecraft but I don't understand the game. The description on Wikipedia calls it a "sandbox building" video game but I don't know what that is. YouTube videos seem to just show off terrain that people have built. Do you just build things with virtual blocks? What is the gameplay like?
Not trolling at all, I just don't understand what the gameplay is like. Any Minecraft players here?

I actually just got the game and I too was clueless what the game was about but my friends said to get the damn game so I did.
Anyways so far after playing for a couple hours and what I've learned from it is, you're this dude in a sandbox world; they're just big games with a big world with lots to do; example Fallout, GTA..etc. the point is at least what I got from it is to survive and build ur "home" and discover new things; you are able to fuse different items to create different tools and stuff like an axe, pickaxe, shovel...etc. the game is currently in beta and will definitely improve.
But I'm sure there's more to it than what I've just said, I just started and thats what I've got out of it so far.

Yeah, basically, you mine stuff, then use the materials to build stuff.
It's sounds simple, but once you get into it, you'll probably be addicted.

Minecraft seems very interesting. I've seem some gameplay and it looks very challenging and very addicting. I am staying away from it.

The best way to learn is to look at the FAQs on the minecraft site, but i'll break it down a little bit.
Basically when you start you are on a race for the first day to start building stuff so you can make a shelter before night time when baddies come out.
Start buy punching all the nearby trees until you get a few wood blocks, then go into inventory and begin making stuff (like planks and blocks), then place four blocks to make a workbench and expand to 3x3 crafting. now you can create shovels and stuff. Basically watch the tutorials and learn the basics of crafting. Then you're gonna want to build a shelter before night time comes, wait until morning and start exploring. Until you get better equips and establish a home base and resources I would make sure to be in by nightfall. You can also disable enemies by turning it on peaceful.
Basically there is no goal to minecraft other than build and explore. There are sites that offer already made maps, or inventory editing as well but it's really all about accomplishing your goals through hard work (sure my sweet floating skull fort took a week or so to mine the resources and i had to dig a quarry straight down to bed rock, but it was so worth it). I haven't messed around with too much online stuff, i mainly use it to build with when I'm bored. Basically just give yourself projects to build, like a pirate ship, or a castle, or an underwater base with a lava room. Look around online to figure out how to accomplish these things and soon you'll be able to build all sorts of things!
