It all depends on the person and where you live.

For me...my third in University my grocery list for tomorrow is:

    Water
    Veggie Chunks
    Fish
    Pasta
    Mac & Cheese
    Crackers
    Cheese
    Bread
    Drink Mix

You can blend and mix stuff and get a big meal remember, example if you have some tin food u can mix it in with the mac and cheese and have a big meal that stretches a bit further.

    1 quecumber R5
    2kg potatos. R20
    500g(1lb) all bran cereal R20
    2litre milk. R15
    Wholewheat bread. R5
    Doz eggs. R10
    500g pasta. R5
    500g sandwich meat R20
    500g minced beef. R25
    250g cheese. R15
    500g rice. R10

That comes down to R170 or $22. I also think that your first shopping trip is going to be the most expensive because you need salt, pepper, oil, butter and condiments, but I'm sure you wont use everything on the list in one week, so that should make up for it.

now just eat cereal in the morning, bread for lunch and get creative for dinner.

    My grocery list is:
    • 500g of Rice and 300g of Pasta(less than 50 cents, in Italy)
    • 200g pork meat, I use it to make a nice risotto (again, pork is cheap ~2€)
    • chicken (cheap! ~3€)
    • 300g high quality steak(I think the most expensive item on the list, after wine. ~10€ I think)
    • 200g of Pancetta(it's like a super bacon ~5€)
    • 3-4 Peppers
    • 2 onions
    • 4 tomatoes
    • 1kg of Apples
    • 1kg of Oranges
    • 500g walnuts (fruit and vegetables total: ~12€)
    • a bottle of wine (~15€)

I always buy the highest quality food possible(except for wine of course), you could buy the same things for less.
