Default Good / cheap router which can handle many connections?

I recently threw out my Netgear WGT264 since it seems that it couldn't handle enough connections. If I'm running bittorent my whole network gets clogged and I can barely surf if I don't limit the number of connections in the torrent client.
I have no network problems whatsoever without it, but I still need a router to use my laptop.

I'm looking for an affordable router ($15-$40) which can handle torrents and let me do other things at the same time. Any recommendations?

It normally would be good to limit your upload speed to 80% of what your connection is. If you are trying to surf the web, torrent traffic can interfere, even with a better router this might happen.

thanks for the answer, but I have 100 Mbit, so the router is really the issue :)

I bought a CD-R King CW-5354U router (Tomato flashed). If converted to dollars, it would be $30. The interface has way more functions than my previous router. Forgot to mention it supports NAS.

If you can't buy the above, look for Linksys router (forgot the model). Look for the one that is supported by Tomato firmware. You can then flash the firmware into your Linksys router, but unlike the router above your warranty will be void.

The linksys wrt54g is an excellent choice for a good cheap router if you don't need wireless n. It supports ddwrt, hyperwrt and tomato firmware I believe.

    I personally have a Mikrotik 750G.
It is a fantastic little router if you know what you are doing. Not the most user friendly though but works brilliantly if setup correctly. :)

    Hey zig,

I use a TP-Link router, TL-WR340G+. You can buy one for about 20$ and its great. Doesn't freeze and I never switch it off. I heavily torrent with it, have a NAS connected to it and have 3 other laptops connecting to it over WiFi.

If you're will to spend more, look into routers that can be flashed with DD-WRT or OpenWRT(more advanced, use only you're familiar with linux) because you can customize your router for you needs..For example, make it connect to a VPN or be able to use it as a hotspot like the Linksys wrt54g.
Supported devices for DD WRT can be found here:
