Default Samsung unveils powerful new drive

Samsung Electronics, the world's largest computer chip maker, said today it has developed a new solid state drive which is expected to replace hard disk drives in laptop computers.

Samsung said its 256-gigabyte solid state drive (SSD) for data storage is 2.4 times faster than traditional hard drives. The company plans to begin production of SSDs this year.

The new SSD "represents a bold step in the shift to notebooks with significantly improved performance and larger storage capacities," the company said in a statement.

Samsung described the new SSD - which is 6.35cm long and 9.5mm thick - as the world's smallest of its kind. It can read up to 200 megabytes of data per second.

It said, citing market research agency iSuppli, that 35 per cent of notebook computers would use the SSD by 2012.

I love the concept of SSD's.

I mean, its only a matter of time before they remove the mechanical parts to HDD's.

I guess sooner is better than later, as long as theyve done their research.

Yeah man, I heard about this concept a while back but the disk sizes were too small, from what I hear its coming along fast, yeah its always amazed me this hasnt happened sooner, its always the bloody hard disk that goes with its flappy mechanical parts, gonna seriously cut down on noise too.

We had SSD in our big iron several years ago but it was very small and for high priority data (more like a super cache).

We are on the verge of getting SSD in our blades so we can have our hypervisors load locally rather than from SAN boot or USB key. Just hope the costs are reasonable.

This will be great for everyone when it hits the mainstream...

SSD is a heaven, as the only bottleneck of the pc is HDD..

I start using SD as my primary HDD this year on one of my computers (the one I use as seedbox) and not only for speed most for reliability cuz I hate when an HDD goes dead and all info is lost and hate it the most when its the primary so I bouth a 4gb Kingston SD and the adapter from Adonics IDE to SD Adapter from Addonics ....same concept as SSD but I cant wait for companies to lower the price of SSD...its new so its gona be way to hight, I think the 128Gb SSD is around $300 USD sum like that

    A IDE to SD adaptor!

That is so cool, considering you can buy 32GB SDs for around £100. Pretty pricy, but SDs are very small....
