    Default Looking for a harddrive

Have been looking around for a portable harddrive for all of my torrenting needs. Came across this and thought it was rather decent especially for the price. Comes with a 5 year warranty as well. I hope this may benefit the users here in the United States.

I was wondering what harddrives other users use and if they have any recommendations as well.

I've had 3 WDs including the MyBook in the past and they all crapped out on my within a month of purchasing them. Luckily I was able to refund the harddrives. It's quite possible I just got a bad lot each time :P All of the Seagates that I have purchased have yet to fail me.

I don't like WD too .. I had 2 WD Green 500 GBs for my home server (I intentionally took Green edition cause I thought its low rpm and low power consumer so it will be more stable). They both died within a month with all my data (and they were all unrecoverable)!!

So I got Samsung F1 .. and after 1.5 years, its still performing like brand new with my 24/7 running home server. So if you are planning to go with WD, think twice.

Well the main issue is I would like to find something that is portable and easily taken around since I'm on the go often. But yes, it seems like common sense to look around and to check reviews before biting on a deal. I have read many concerns that Seagate has lowered the quality of their harddrives in the past couple of years. This also seems to be an older model.

hi bakarasyed, i have 2 wd externals 1x 250gig via usb and 1 x wd 1tb ext via
firewire i think, they are good drives and sure they will serve you well, but i must admit i found transfering data seems a little slow so i have stopped using them too much now and just installed another 1tb seagate 3.5" which is working fine aswell.

I have a Samsung HD for almost 2 years, i'm torrenting in it non-stop. A WD i bought died with two months of light usage.

I think that even if Samsung is more expensive, it worths for the headache the others can give to you. I'm an adept of the quality over quantity, but i've also heard many times that eventually all HDs will die and your best shot is to have a redundancy to avoid loosing data.

It really just depends on which model seagate you buy. :)

A lot of their newer 1.5TB/1TB drives were plagued with firmware issues, and just general crappy build quality.

I however, have 3 250GB 7200.10's Seagates that are now over 3 years old and have been running in a raid array in my computer, 24/7/365 (minus reboots/power outages) and have had 0 problems whatsoever.

Again, like my statement above. Certain models of drives do have issues. Certain ones don't. I am guessing you got a crappy model of drive.

I think in my history of computing, I have had 2 western digitals fail, 1 seagate fail, 3 maxtor's fail, and 0 hitachi's fail.

My current lineup of hard drives includes:
    3 250gb Seagates (3+ years old)
    2 1TB Hitachi (1 Year old)
1 2TB Seagate XT (a few days old)
1 320GB western digital blue (2 years old)
    3 32GB OCZ SSD's (10 months old)
    2 2TB samsungs (a few days old)

In that time I had 1 seagate green fail on me. It got the click of death and I lost approx 800GB worth of data.

    I also replaced 5 old IDE/Sata drives - 1 Hitachi from 2006 (250GB IDE that still functions)
2 Maxtor 300GB drives (IDE - from 2005 - both were sold and still work as well)
    1 WD 250GB Blue (SATA - from 2007 - sold to a friend)
    1 WD 80GB Blue (IDE - from 2004 - sold to a friend)

Basically in the last 5 years I have gone with a mix of brands, and they have all worked wonderfully except one drive that died after 1.5 years of work. If you want my 2 cents. Go to newegg, read some reviews on their 1TB+ drives and you will get an idea of which drives have issues and which ones are issue free.

    Newegg.com - Computer Hardware,Hard Drives,Internal Hard Drives,1TB and higher

I'd also advise you to make an investment and get 2 drives. Mirror the data on them. Leave one drive on 24/7, and only turn on the otherone to copy the data to it. If one fails, you just turn on the otherone, and don't lose a thing. Then you buy another drive, and repeat the process. It might cost a little bit, but the investment is worth it. Loosing a ton of data sucks more than you can imagine.
