Thread: Radeon 6970 And 6950 Are Out

AMD just launched the Radeon HD 6970 and 6950 graphics card. The Radeon 6970 is retailing around $370 and the Radeon 6950 is retailing around $300 (from what I can tell from newegg). These cards are meant to be the top cards in the market, but are supposed to give really good bang for your buck. The Radeon 6970 and 6950 are realistically competing against the GTX 570/480 and GTX 470 respectively.

Hmm, isnt the 5970 faster then the 6970. Different architecture. I wanna see some heads up benchmarks against the GTX 580. I am thinking of getting this card.

Here is a benchmark that involves crysis: Sapphire Radeon 6970

The 5970 is faster than the 6970. The 6970 really performs on par with the GTX 570 from what I've seen and in some games the GTX 570 beats it out. And they're both behind the GTX 580. The two fastest cards out there are the 5970 and GTX 580 and depending on if the game is optimized for NVIDIA or AMD one will beat the other. However either one of those should be enough to play almost anything at 2500x1600 with settings notched up. If you're not going to be gaming at anything higher than 1900x1200 you're best bet is going with the the GTX 570 (it beats out the 6970 and is cheaper). Or even the 5870 which I saw was $260 (with a rebate though).

Yes. Not only different architecture, but the 5970 has two GPU's on the PCB.

So if you were to give it an order - it would go something like this.

2 CF 6970 > 5970(really a Crossfire on one board) > 6970 > 5870 > 6950 > 5850 > 6870 > 6850.

EDIT: And a more cost effect solution is still to buy a pair of 5850's or 6850's. You can get a set of 5850's for about 350$ these days - even less used on ebay and online buy/sell forums.

So what happen to the x2 marking. Last time I was into or looking for gfx card the 4970 x2 was reigning king of the gfx card. This was alot better then the GTX 280 at the time they were competing. So wouldn't the 5970 be 5970 x2? Since it has 2 cards in one?

It might be due to a change in AMD's naming scheme. But I don't have a source on this so I really don't have any idea. Also do you mean the 4870x2 since that had dual 4870 GPUs. Going by that the 5970 would be the 5870x2.
