NetMeter is ok... but as somebody else mentioned before, the best way to measure bandwidth usage is at the router level.

I've been using Tomato's firmware for the past several months and keeping track with its own bandwidth meter is very easy and detailed as it provides me with a decent amount of data that I could use to compare against whatever numbers my ISP would present to me using their own measuring tool.

Thanks for all the software suggestions. For those of us that have Comcast, they don't provide us anything to check our bandwith...."We are going to cap your bandwith to 250GB a month, but we are not going to give you anyway to see how close you are so you know to stop, and then we are going to send you a letter telling you that you are over and should watch how much you use it".....morons....

I think NetMeter and DUMeter would be the best choices, I've been using them for years.

SNMP Monitoring with applications like Paessler PRTG is more for nerds like me, but it's cool

PS: it would be very interesting to know what made the authors of posts #7, #10, #11, #17, #19, #20, #27 and #29 think what they wrote is relevant to the question of the OP. Meh...
