I mount my drives over the internet with NFS (SMB/Windows-style sharing is pure crap, as is most things used and/or misused by Windows). I have a gigabit LAN, so I don't notice any slowdowns. When buying a popcorn hour, I'll have to buy another switch and do some cabling, but then I'll be able to stream 1080p over the network.
