I have decided its time to give up using the netbook.
I want a budget laptop ideally to play the STALKER series, which I have bought but never played as I knew my computer just wouldnt cut it
any suggestions...?

Mention your budget first. Can't start digging up components without knowing that.
If you have a bit of cash, people are liking HP's envy:

i7 processor, 64 bit windows. Shouldn't be too shabby for gaming.
I think you are wrong about envy series but check this out then:
Newegg.com - ASUS N71JQ-X1 NoteBook Intel Core i7 720QM(1.60GHz) 17.3" 4GB Memory DDR3 1066 500GB HDD 7200rpm DVD Super Multi ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730
It is Asus N series, G series probaly cannot fit into your budget without stretching it.
i'm just going on what i saw published which was the 2009 score from all the major retailers on customer returns/faults/hardware failure etc. so i'm not saying the Envy series in particular, just going by the HP brand, which rated the highest for failures and returns.
That does look good, and the Graphics card rates about 30fps on average, which isn't too shabby.
Only thing is, i'm won't be getting one from the US, shipping tax would be way too much.
I know that feeling, customs duties suck. I'm only in Canada and thought I could get some pretty good deals out of the states but once you factor in Customs Duties, its not worth it.
So without knowing what is on offer in the UK, I cant really help, but best of luck to you. There seem to be a lot of good mid-budget range laptops out there that should be fine for you.
OEM PCs are only good if you want to use licensed Windows, otherwise they're a waste of money and it'd be better to go for a custom build.
yeah i'd like to go for a custom build or maybe a barebones project, but not too sure for where to start looking
