We all probably watch a movie from time to time, and my guess is that one doesn't want to spend additional money to buy a movie player software, when such great free alternatives exist.
The purpose of this thread (and poll) is to share opinions about our favorite movie players, possibly pointing users to software or features they never heard of before.
I will group the most popular of them after platform specificity, and I will start with the two great cross-platform players:
An (arguably incomplete) list of Windows specific software:
And, finally, a list of commonly used Unix-like platform specific software:
- Media Player Classic
- There also are many free-to-use, but closed-source and essentially proprietary Windows players out there:
- Windows Media Player (if you have Windows, you probably heard about or used this one)
- KMPlayer
- GOM Player
- Quintessential Player
- Core Media Player
This lists may be incomplete, and all your opinions and additions are welcome.
- Totem media player (Ubuntu and other GNOME-based distros default)
- Kaffeine/Dragon Player (KDE specific)
It would be great if you will support your vote with a post containing the favorite features of your player of choice.
My favorite one is UMPlayer, the new GUI front-end for MPlayer (I extensively used SMPlayer before this one). I use both Windows and Linux, and this player is cross-platform. It also is fully-loaded with all the features and shortcuts I need, and handles without any problem all the formats I need.
The reason I prefer it to VLC is the Subtitle Size +/- option and shortcut, which is available even for mkv embedded subtitles. I especially love this feature, as I need a subtitle for almost all the movies I see, and VLC doesn't handle the size and shading of text so well.
That being said, I wish you happy voting!![]()
